For centuries, Beijingers lived in small hutongs off of narrow alley ways that wound through the entire city. Multiple generations of one family occupied cramped attached apartments, sharing a common kitchen and centered around a small courtyard. But in the last 20-30 years, the vast majority of hutongs in Beijing and cities across China have been razed in the name of modernization to make way for block after block of high-rise apartment buildings.
We work with a husband and wife team who salvage cherished furniture that sat for generations in many of the hutongs that are being cleared. They refurbish each one of these reclaimed pieces by hand to create a completely unique signature piece for any room or home.
Each one of these reborn furnishings is finished in distinct vibrant colors that exude the hipness and modernity of contemporary China while preserving the spirit and aesthetic from the final days of China’s last dynasties.
